ITINARERY:

Day 1,: Arrival to Rovinj

Today you will start with transfer from Moistrana in Slovenia to Croatian region of Istria. It will take about 3.5 – 4 hours. I suggest to stay for two nights in a beautiful town of Rovinj and to enjoy the rest of first the day here. Easter Monday is public holiday in Croatia but it’s also beginning of our tourist season. So, the town should just wake up from winter sleep. It will be too cold for swimming but great time for walking around narrow streets of old Rovinj, situated on a peninsula. To stretch your legs and to catch those 10,000 steps, rent bikes and discover a beautiful park-forest Zlatni rt (The Golden Cape) just around the corner. Or rest with ice-cream or ice-coffee in one of many cafes by the sea.

Possible addition! Stopping in the small Slovenian town of Piran for a walk and lunch.

Day 2,: Explore Istria

Today you can do many different programs. You can stay in Rovinj and enjoy relaxing day. As mentioned above, there is a beautiful forest-part Zlatni rt just out of city center. It’s great for bike rides. Boat trips to the surrounding area are for sale at the city port – to Limski canal or late afternoon dolphin watching (I’m just not sure if that is available in April. But I would say yes in this week after Easter.)

Another option is a day trip around Istrian peninsula. There are many possibilities because there is really a lot to see. From architecture, nature and dinosaurs to wine, olive oil and truffles tastings. For info about the region: https://www.istra.hr/en

Pula and Bale. First is the larger city with Roman remains. This includes the 6th largest preserved Roman amphitheater in the world. Quite the contrary, Bale is a small town with typical medieval architecture and an old palace of local elite but it’s also place where dinosaurs use to live. https://www.pulainfo.hr/     https://www.bale-valle.hr/en

Day 3,: Rovinj – Plitvice

You will drive away from Istria and along the north part of the Adriatic coast. If time permits, stop for coffee and cake in Opatija for a 19th century high sociaty athmosphere. It was a first tourism resort town in Croatia. Today, interesting old hotels architecture was very well preserved so it looks like some Austrian spa-town – just at sea.

In the town of Senj, you will turn towards a mountain to enter Lika region. Rizvanuša is just next to the beautiful Velebit mountain. There are few interesting places around. Three national parks (one is Plitvice lakes), one of the best places for trout fly fishing and a birth place of a great physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla. Yes, the guy after whom Tesla car was named. You will not have time for all atractions around but if you are interested in that, skip Opatija and visit Tesla’s Smiljan.

Day 4, 16.04.2020.: Plitvice – Zagreb

There is no need for long explanation about Plitvice lakes National Park. It’s simply gorgeous place with 16 lakes and bunch of waterfalls. On a sunny day, the water is magically emerald color, in which the trees of the surrounding forests reflect. And walkways are just there, along lakes and next to the waterfalls…. Nice… The only problem is that it’s not a secret any more. So, it can be crowded or even very crowded. But it’still worth it. It’s a great four hours or so walk.

Day 5, 17.04.2020.: Zagreb

You have all day to explore the capital of Croatia. Town which has been developing since the 11th century. The oldest part is on two hills where traders and craftsmen used to live. Later it became home for the political elite. In the 19th century, the beautiful Lower Town was built – parks surrounded with palaces and apartments biuldings. After WWII the city expanded greatly, especially to the south. There, on the other side of the rail tracks, you can see entire neighborhoods built during the time of Yugoslavia.

There are plenty of options in Zagreb to fill the time. I definitely recommend walking through the old part of town – Kaptol and Gradec and the parks of the Lower Town. Don’t miss the Dolac Market, which is open daily in the morning. After that, you have plenty of time for museums and some city attractions. Up to the present day, 19th century gas lamps have been preserved in Gradec or Gornji grad. It gives a wonderful atmosphere to this part of the city in the evening. Don’t miss it. You can also get there by the Zagreb funicular, the shortest in the world.
